Big Buck Bunny (High Resolution iPod Version)

Big Buck Bunny is an open animated short created by the same fine folks who brought you Elephants Dream.

I went to the official Big Buck Bunny download page and saw they only had a 320×180 iPod version available. However according to the specs, the iPods with video and the iPhone support up to 640×480 video.

So I went ahead and created a 640×360 version which should look beautiful when hooking up a video iPod or iPhone to a standard definition TV.

I’m an avid supporter of the open source philosophy. Showing the uninitiated that this philosophy can produce amazing results is one of my goals, so I hope this helps.

I used the 1080p H.264 version as the source and transcoded using Quicktime Pro and Perian. Full tutorial on how to create iPod friendly videos coming soon. The videos also progressively download in flash players such as the popular JW Media Player.

Update (6/7/08 @ 15:10):
I just checked the official Big Buck Bunny download page today, and they now have a 640×360 version available. I’d like to think that I had some influence in getting that particular resolution added, but it’s more likely due to the fact the new iPhones are coming out this week.

Since there’s no need for my transcoded Big Buck Bunny video anymore, I checked out the official Elephants Dream download page and the link for the iPod version is broken, so I created a high resolution iPod version of Elephants Dream at the following links.

I setup your own account on Mommy’s laptop. I put shortcuts to Firefox, Fancy Pants, Fancy Pants 2, Elmo, Super Why, PBS Kids, and PhotoBooth. I made the links in all caps because you have trouble recognizing lowercase letters, but you got the uppercase ones pretty much down.

I know that you can’t quite read, but you can recognize words that were previously pointed out to you (i.e. your name or the word milk). I showed you only once how to login and what each shortcut links to. Right after when I put the mouse over the different words, you were able to perfectly tell me what each one said. That means you memorized all that as I was talking for those few seconds.

To me, that’s pretty amazing. I don’t think I’d be able to memorize instantly what 8 groups of random letters meant right after being shown only once, and you’re only 3.5 years old. Maybe you have a photographic memory to a certain degree. That would be so cool.

When you’re able to read a word that you’ve never seen before, then I’ll know for sure that you can read fluently. Don’t worry, one day it’ll just click. Then you can read this post and others to come, and see how incredibly smart you are.

I’ve marked my calendar for Monday, June 9, 2008 at 10:00 am for the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference keynote presentation. All signs point to a new iPhone being revealed during the event. I’ve held off on getting an iPhone because it is currently missing some features that are deal breakers for me.
